THE GEN-Z CONVERSATION
Is Gen-Z Choosing
Mental Health
Over Hustle Culture?
What happens when an entire generation starts questioning
whether success should really feel this exhausting?
|
|
Gen-Z understands success a little differently.
For many young adults today, success isn't just about climbing
the career ladder. It's about having peace of mind,
freedom to slow down, and overall well-being —
physically and mentally.
So why is an entire generation choosing to slow down?
The answer is pretty simple.
|
When hustling
became the norm.
For years, work culture celebrated hustling and building the
"perfect life." Mental health was often pushed to the side
while stability, productivity and measurable outcomes took
centre stage.
If you weren't trying hard enough, you weren't part of the
crowd.
Exhaustion became almost synonymous with ambition. Personal
life was put on hold to make money. Poor sleep, unhealthy food
habits and constantly being busy became the new normal.
Somewhere along the way, people didn't realise they were
exhausted.
"Exhaustion eventually became a personality."
|
|
A NEW GENERATION
And then Gen-Z entered the workforce.
Things have been different for a while now.
Gen-Z has started making choices that favour physical and
mental well-being. They're not necessarily waking up before
sunrise just to "win the day."
Sometimes, they're having a coffee in peace. Visiting a café
to unwind. Spending time with family and friends. Sleeping in.
Taking a break.
And they're beginning to realise that none of this makes them
less ambitious.
|
Gen-Z & the conversation shift.
Gen-Z has grown up online, understanding global reach and
networking in ways previous generations didn't.
But access to a global world comes with its downsides.
Every day, social media shows us someone starting a business,
travelling the world, getting promoted, buying a house or
seemingly figuring life out.
And every achievement we see can quietly become another reason
to ask ourselves:
Gen-Z is beginning to recognise the toll of constantly
comparing their lives with people who have completely
different circumstances, opportunities and journeys.
Worth is no longer being measured only by how productive the
day was.
|
MAYBE IT'S TIME TO ASK
Is feeling stressed something we're supposed to be proud of?
What if time for family, friends, hobbies and sleep isn't
laziness?
Is success supposed to feel exhausting?
|
|
We now see people talking about mental health and
therapy over coffee.
Friends remind each other to take breaks instead of burning
themselves out. Employees demand healthier workplace
environments alongside the salary they deserve.
The conversation is shifting.
Not because this generation doesn't want to work —
but because work is no longer the entire identity.
|
|
LET'S CLEAR SOMETHING UP
Does slowing down mean
giving up?
Not at all.
One of the biggest misconceptions about slowing down is that
it means becoming less ambitious.
Young adults still dream big. They want successful careers.
They want financial independence. They want to build meaningful
lives.
They just don't want to sacrifice their mental health to prove
that they're working hard.
|
|
Boundaries are being drawn. Jobs that consistently damage
well-being are being reconsidered. Saying "no" because you're
not available 24/7 is becoming more common.
Maybe we're simply exhausted of...
|
✦ Comparing our lives on social media.
|
|
✦ Feeling guilty for choosing rest.
|
|
✦ Believing our worth depends on productivity.
|
Admitting that we're exhausted isn't weakness.
It's honesty.
|
|
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Why does moving away from hustle culture matter?
Chasing milestones and working towards goals can absolutely be
part of success. There will always be people driven to pursue
their next achievement, and there will be days when working
long hours is necessary.
But that isn't the only definition of success.
Sometimes success looks like:
✓ Getting eight hours of sleep.
✓ Having dinner with your family without checking work emails.
✓ Taking a break before burnout takes over.
✓ Resting without feeling guilty.
✓ Having ambitions that don't come at the cost of your happiness.
Working hard shouldn't mean constantly sacrificing your health,
relationships, passions and happiness along the way.
|
|
A DIFFERENT DEFINITION OF SUCCESS
We haven't given up on our dreams.
We haven't stopped working towards them.
We've simply started to believe that there is a life beyond
our achievements.
A life where success isn't measured only by how much we
accomplish, but also by how much we're able to experience,
enjoy and cherish along the way.
“Don't get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.”
— Dolly Parton
